Marie Andéßner dissertation scholarship

You will receive 23,600 EUR in total for your doctoral thesis. The amount will be paid out over the course of a year in 12 monthly instalments of approximately 1,967 EUR each. Thanks to this grant, you will be able to concentrate fully on your doctoral thesis without having to take on a part-time job. The grant is awarded by the University of Salzburg (Paris-Lodron University of Salzburg) to support women in research and is administered by the Equal Opportunities Office (gendup) in collaboration with the Equal Treatment Working Group. The grant cannot be extended and may only be claimed once.

Who can apply

• Women only: You are a PhD student.
• University: You are enrolled on a PhD programme at the University of Salzburg.
• Previous degree: You have obtained a diploma, a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification.
• Thesis approved: The PhD Committee has approved your research proposal.
• Field of study: All compartments are open.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Where you research: You can carry out research at universities in Austria or abroad.
• No paid post: During the funding period, you must not take up employment at a university or research institution, and you must arrange your own health, accident and pension insurance.

How to apply

Please email your complete application documents as a PDF file to the Gendup Office by 31 January. A panel of academics from all faculties will review the applications and, where appropriate, invite shortlisted candidates to give a personal presentation. The Rector’s Office will decide on the award of the scholarships by the end of June.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined: only women who are enrolled on a PhD programme at the University of Salzburg and have an approved dissertation proposal are eligible to apply, meaning that the pool of eligible candidates is small. Only two doctoral scholarships are awarded each year, and the university reports fierce competition in many departments. If you clearly meet the eligibility criteria and submit a well-reasoned application by the deadline, your prospects are good, but the selection process is extremely competitive.
