About this scholarship
What DART offers
DART is a full-time PhD programme in the fields of accounting, financial reporting and taxation. It is offered jointly by the University of Graz and the University of Vienna in Austria. Teaching is conducted entirely in English and focuses on research methods such as analytical modelling, empirical analysis and quantitative methods. If you are admitted without any other source of funding, you will receive a full scholarship to cover your tuition fees. The exact monthly amount is not disclosed by the programme. You will begin with intensive core courses in mathematics, statistics, economic modelling and research methods. This is followed by research seminars and your dissertation, during which you will have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at a partner university. Former graduates now hold academic positions at universities such as Melbourne, Basel and the Vienna University of Economics and Business.
Who can apply
- Degree: You have completed a diploma or Master’s degree in economics or social sciences, or are about to graduate. A Bachelor’s degree alone is not sufficient. In exceptional cases, related subjects may also be recognised.
- Timing: You can apply even before you have graduated. To do so, please submit a provisional transcript and state your expected graduation date.
- Skills: You have a sound knowledge of mathematics. A degree in accountancy, finance or economics is strongly recommended.
- Language: You need a good command of English. You don’t need to know German.
- Tests: You may submit GRE or GMAT results, as well as TOEFL results or the results of an equivalent English language test.
- Nationality: You can apply from any country.
How to apply
You must submit an application form, a CV, a personal statement, academic transcripts, your test results, two confidential letters of recommendation from academics, and a writing sample, such as your Master’s thesis. Applications are assessed in two rounds. The final application deadline is 31 March. Once admitted, you will enrol either at the University of Graz or at the University of Vienna.
How realistic are your chances?
This is a small, specialised research programme with high entry requirements: strong quantitative skills, standardised test results and two academic references. This narrows down the pool of applicants to those who are seriously pursuing an academic career in the field of accountancy. If you clearly meet these requirements and can demonstrate genuine research potential, your prospects are good. As places are limited, it is advantageous to apply in the early application round.
