The Bertebos Prize

You will receive a one-off prize of about 36,000 EUR (400,000 SEK) as well as a certificate. The prize is awarded every two years to a scientist. You will also be able to plan and host a scientific seminar with international guests, organised in collaboration with the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry and the Bertebos Foundation. The Bertebos Foundation, which was established 1994 by Olof and Brita Stenström, funds the prize, whilst the Academy selects the winner. The award ceremony takes place as part of a celebration in Stockholm, which in the past has been presided over by members of the Swedish Royal Family.

Who can win it

• What you do: You are a researcher whose work has opened up new avenues in the fields of nutrition, agriculture, animal health or the study of nature and ecosystems.
• Career stage: You are an experienced researcher with a proven track record, not a student.
• Nationality: Anyone can win, regardless of their nationality or place of residence.
• Impact: Your research findings have made a genuine, internationally recognised contribution to your field.

How the winner is chosen

You cannot nominate yourself. Others put forward candidates as part of an open call for nominations, the deadline for which is 15 April of the year preceding the award ceremony. A committee of the Academy reviews the nominations, and the Academy’s Council makes the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

It is a single, prestigious international prize that is awarded only once every two years and is therefore highly selective. It recognises a lifetime’s work rather than an outstanding individual achievement. Realistic candidates are scientists who are already at the forefront of their field, such as previous winners from the fields of plant breeding, animal health and food science.
