About this scholarship
What the New Carlsberg Foundation funds here
You get a travel grant to cover transport and accommodation for art-history research or study trips. The amount depends on what you apply for:
- Up to DKK 50,000 (about EUR 6,700) for an individual research trip.
- Up to DKK 125,000 (about EUR 16,800) for a joint study trip by a Danish art academy.
- Up to DKK 75,000 (about EUR 10,000) to host an art-history conference in Denmark with international participants.
The grant can cover your full costs or part of them. It comes from the New Carlsberg Foundation (Ny Carlsbergfondet) in Copenhagen, which wants to strengthen art history and link Danish and international research. The grant does not cover daily allowances, meals or small purchases. It also does not fund artistic research or trips to prepare a PhD application.
Who can apply
- Who you are: You are an art historian, museum professional or curator. A Danish art academy can also apply for a group study trip for its visual-arts students.
- What the trip is for: Your trip has a clear professional purpose outside Denmark, such as archive and collection visits, a conference or seminar, an artist visit or research networking. You can show concrete appointments, such as meetings or studio visits.
- Institutional link: You have a better chance if you are attached to a university, museum or art centre, but it is not required.
- Field: Your work is in art history and visual arts.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply. Individual trips must go outside Denmark, while conferences and academy study trips are tied to Danish institutions.
- Timing: Your trip has not started before the application deadline.
How to apply
You apply through the foundation's online system. You fill in a short form and attach a project description and a budget. There are two deadlines a year, both at 12:00 noon. In 2026 they fall on 9 March and 7 September. The board reviews applications at meetings held roughly every four weeks and replies through the online system.
