About this scholarship
Unforeseen Circumstances grant (UPV)
At the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), you will receive a grant of full or partial waiver of your tuition fees as well as an additional grant of up to 1,800 EUR to cover travel, accommodation, travel expenses or study materials. The exemption applies to the credits or modules for which you are enrolling for the first or second time, specifically for the academic years 2025/2026 and 2026/2027. In exceptional cases, you may receive more than 1,800 EUR. This is emergency financial assistance provided by the UPV to students affected by a sudden, serious event that jeopardises their ability to continue their studies.
Who can apply
- University: You are enrolled on an official Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme at the UPV.
- Field of study: Any subject.
- Nationality: You are a national of an EU country or a non-EU national lawfully resident in Spain with a work permit. You cannot apply if you have temporary residence status (‘estancia’). In exceptional cases, non-EU citizens without a residence permit may also be considered.
- Sudden hardship: A serious, unforeseen event during this academic year has caused you or your family harm and led to significant financial difficulties. These include, for example, job loss, a serious illness, a disability, incapacity to work, or the death of the family member who was the main breadwinner.
- Not your fault: The event must be beyond your control. A generally low family income alone is not sufficient. There must be a specific, sudden deterioration in circumstances.
- No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other scholarship or grant for the same purpose.
How to apply
You apply online through the UPV Electronic Office using the official form from the Grants Unit. Attach proof of the event and the loss of income. The deadline is 31 December 2026. The Social Action Commission weighs how severe your situation is and your family's finances, and may also look at your grades.
How realistic are your chances?
This is not a general-purpose grant, but emergency financial assistance for a narrowly defined group: UPV students who can provide evidence of a sudden, serious event that has affected their financial situation. The eligibility criteria are clearly defined and the total budget is limited (37,700 EUR for 2026). A clearly documented, genuine emergency has a real chance of success, whilst cases without a specific triggering event will be excluded. Apply for assistance immediately after the event occurs, as funds may run out during the course of the year.
