About this award / prize

What you get

For an outstanding MPhys research project in the field of atmospheric, oceanic and planetary physics, you will receive a one-off cash prize of approximately 189 EUR (150 GBP). The examiners from the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford award this prize for work submitted as part of the ‘Final Honour School’ examinations. The prize is awarded for a completed project and does not constitute ongoing funding.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are in your fourth year of the four-year MPhys (Master of Physics) degree programme at the University of Oxford.
  • Project field: You are submitting an MPhys research project in the field of atmospheric, oceanic and planetary physics – in other words, research into the atmosphere, the oceans and the planets.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. There are no restrictions regarding your background.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The examiners select the winner from amongst the MPhys projects submitted each summer for the ‘Final Honour School’ final examinations.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is very specific: only MPhys students at the University of Oxford who submit a project in this precise field of physics are eligible, and only one person is awarded the prize each year. It is not possible to apply directly, so it is entirely up to you to produce outstanding project work. Please regard the prize as recognition of an outstanding project rather than as funding on which to base your plans.
