About this scholarship
Read-Tuckwell Bursary
You will receive approximately 4,402 EUR for one year to fund postgraduate research at University of Bristol. The money comes from a donation by Mrs Tuckwell. It is used to support research into ‘human immortality’ and closely related topics, namely questions concerning life after death: near-death experiences, resurrection, religious conceptions of the afterlife, and how heaven has been depicted throughout different eras. For example, an MPhil programme at the Institute of Theology and Religious Studies was funded in this way.
Who can apply
- Level: You are a postgraduate student, for example on an MPhil or PhD programme.
- University: You’re studying at the University of Bristol in the UK.
- Subject: Their research focuses on human immortality or a related topic, such as the afterlife, the resurrection or eschatology (beliefs about death and the end of the world), usually within the context of theology and the study of religion.
- Nationality: You can apply from any country.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding is very narrowly targeted. It is aimed exclusively at PhD students at a single university who are conducting research into a single, specialised topic, meaning that very few people meet the criteria to apply for it. If your research does indeed focus on the afterlife and you are studying at Bristol, you will be among a small group of candidates. Please note that the scholarship is not currently listed on the University of Bristol’s funding pages. You should therefore check with the university to confirm whether it is still available before relying on it.
