About this scholarship

What you get

You get a one-off grant to carry out medical research at the University of Oulu. The money comes from the Fund of Kosti Marjamaa, one of 25 named donor funds run by the University of Oulu Scholarship Foundation (Oulun yliopiston tukiäätiö). This fund supports research in five medical areas, awarded in turn: heart disease, cancer, eye diseases, mental illness and children's diseases. The Foundation mostly funds doctoral researchers.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are a PhD student. The University of Oulu’s Graduate School has approved your dissertation proposal.
  • Field: Your research relates to one of the five medical fields supported by this fund: heart disease, cancer, eye diseases, mental health conditions or childhood diseases.
  • University: You are a researcher at the University of Oulu.
  • Timing: Your PhD thesis is already well under way, about a year after you started it.
  • Nationality: You are a Finnish citizen.
  • No salary from the university: As long as you are receiving the scholarship, you will not be on the university’s payroll.
  • Grant limit: You have received no more than one grant from the foundation to date. You are eligible to receive a total of two grants.

How to apply

The annual call for applications for PhD scholarships is published around April on the Foundation’s website and on the University’s intranet. You apply via the Foundation’s online scholarship system, and your supervisor submits a reference via the same system. Your faculty reviews and assesses the applications, after which the Foundation’s committee decides who will receive a scholarship.
