About this scholarship

Finnish Foundation for Alcohol Studies research grant

You will receive a monthly scholarship for full-time research work. The amount depends on your academic qualification:

  • 2,200 EUR per month at Master’s level
  • 2,750 EUR per month, if you have a PhD
  • 3,000 EUR per month at docent level (a higher academic rank above a PhD)

The grant is personal and tax-free up to the annual ceiling for artists’ grants (27,129.93 EUR per year in 2026). You may also undertake paid work that takes up to 20% of your time. A separate agreement is required if you wish to devote more time to this. The grant is awarded by the Finnish Foundation for Alcohol Research (Alkoholitutkimussaatio), which was established in 1950 and is primarily funded by the Finnish government.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You must hold at least a Master’s degree. You may apply before completing your degree, but you must submit your degree certificate within 6 months of the application deadline. The scholarship will only be paid out once you have completed your degree.
  • Topic: Your project researches alcohol use and its harms, drug use linked to alcohol, temperance, or gambling harms. Projects aimed at a Master's thesis are not funded.
  • Field of study: Any discipline, including the social and behavioural sciences, biology and medicine, provided your topic falls within the areas mentioned above.
  • Language: The public description of your project must be written in Finnish.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s online portal, which will be open from 1 September to 30 September at 16:00. You may complete the form in Finnish, Swedish or English; however, the public project description must be written in Finnish. After submitting the form, you must sign it electronically using Finnish online banking credentials or a mobile certificate. The Foundation will publish the list of funded projects on its website at the end of November.
