Marie-Madeleine Million-Lajoinie Sociology Grant

You will receive a one-off payment of 1,500 EUR grant to support a study or research project, ideally one involving travel to or from France. The scholarship is awarded by the AFFDU (French Association of University Women). It is named after Marie-Madeleine Million-Lajoinie, a sociologist who served on the association’s scholarship committee for many years.

Who can apply

• Gender: Only women can apply.
• Field of study: You’re studying sociology.
• Study phase: You are currently in the process of completing your doctoral thesis, or are carrying out postdoctoral research (research following your PhD).
• Membership: You are a member of the AFFDU or one of its partner organisations abroad.
• Age: You are 40 years old or younger.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Send your application online by 31 May each year. You need a CV, a motivation letter, a copy of your degree, a letter of recommendation and proof of enrolment. There is a 25 EUR application and membership fee. You get a decision by the end of June.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must be a woman working in the field of sociology, a member of the association, aged 40 or younger, and either in the process of completing a PhD or holding a postdoctoral post. This means that very few people apply for it. The catch is that it is funded by earmarked donations. It is only awarded in years when the fund receives money and the jury finds a candidate who sufficiently meets the requirements. In some previous years, it was not awarded at all. If you meet the criteria and submit a well-reasoned project proposal, your chances are good, but the prize is not awarded every year.
