About this award / prize

The Aodán Ó Donnchadha Memorial Prize

You will receive a cash prize for the best paediatric research project in your final year of medical studies at University College Cork (UCC). Paediatrics is the branch of medicine concerned with children’s health. The exact amount of the prize varies from year to year, as it is funded by the returns on an endowment fund and depends on performance in the capital markets. The 1990 graduating class of the medical programme at UCC established the prize in memory of their fellow student Aodán Ó Donnchadha; it is administered by the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health.

Who can apply

  • University: You are currently a medical student at University College Cork.
  • Time at UCC: You studied at UCC for the three years immediately preceding the year in which you sat your final medical examinations.
  • Exams: You passed the entire final medical examination at the first attempt, without having to sit any resits.
  • The project: You submit one of the strongest paediatric projects under module MX5090.
  • Standard: Your project meets the requirements set by the Academic Council. If no project meets these requirements, the prize may not be awarded this year.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The department’s external assessor reviews the best paediatric projects and selects the winner, sometimes in consultation with departmental staff. If you are shortlisted, please keep all documentation relating to your project, as the assessor may ask to see it.
