About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive 1,000 EUR per year, which is normally paid for the entire duration of your Bachelor’s degree. The amount is paid in a single instalment during the first semester of each year. University College Cork (UCC) funds the scholarship and has named it after Michael P. Mortell, a former President of UCC and an applied mathematician. The funds come from investment income, so the exact amount may vary slightly from year to year.
Who can apply
- University: You’re already studying at UCC.
- Degree: You study Science on the CK407 or CK408 programme and go on to a BSc (Hons) that includes Applied Mathematics.
- Grades: You achieved at least 70% marks in the applied mathematics sections of your first-year science examinations.
- Keeping it: You continue to demonstrate good attendance, progress and exemplary behaviour. Otherwise, the award may be withdrawn.
- Later years: Applied Mathematics must account for a sufficient proportion of your degree programme. For a single-degree programme, this means at least 20 credits in year 2 and 25 in subsequent years; for a dual-degree programme, at least 15 credits in year 2 and 20 in subsequent years.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Other funding: If you already hold a Higher Education Grant or a similar award, you may get less than the full amount where those rules cap your total support.
How to apply
There is no separate application process. The UCC automatically selects the winner based on the results of the first-year science examinations in the summer. The decision is made by a panel comprising the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and his or her permanent staff.
