Fundatie van Renswoude scholarship for a study year abroad

You receive between 500 and 8,500 EUR per study year to study abroad. The money can come as a grant (which you keep), an interest-free loan (repaid within 2 years of finishing your degree or doctorate), or a mix of both. The amount is set for your situation and covers one study year or part of it. If your results are good, you can apply again for a following year. The award comes from a Dutch foundation in The Hague that supports talented students who cannot fully fund a degree abroad.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You hold Dutch or Surinamese citizenship.
• Age: You are between 15 and 29 years old.
• Where you study: You want to do a bachelor's or master's abroad that the Netherlands does not offer, or offers at lower quality than abroad.
• Level: You study at a university or university of applied sciences (hogeschool), you recently finished an HBO/WO degree, or you just completed VWO (pre-university secondary school).
• Grades: You have a grade average of at least 7 on the Dutch scale.
• Which degree: This is your first degree or a direct continuation of it. A second degree only qualifies if it is an arts programme.
• Financial need: You cannot pay for the studies yourself or with your parents' help (their income counts too). Even after using all funding, including the maximum DUO student loan, tuition-fee credit and lifelong-learning credit, you still have a budget gap you can prove.
• Timing: You apply at least 4 months before your studies abroad start. You cannot apply for something that has already happened.

How to apply

You apply online through the foundation's application form with all required documents. There is no fixed deadline, but submit at least 4 months before you start. Depending on the amount you request, you may be invited for a talk with the grants advisor. The board decides in one of its 10 meetings a year (none in July or August), and processing takes 1 to 3 months.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut narrowly. You must be Dutch or Surinamese, aged 15 to 29, have a 7 average, and prove real financial need for a degree abroad that the Netherlands does not offer. That keeps the eligible group small. If you clearly meet these conditions and can document the budget gap, your prospects are good. Apply early, since you need at least 4 months' lead time and cannot claim afterwards.
