Taiwan Scholarship Program

For a Master’s or PhD programme, you will receive monthly living allowance of NTD 20,000 (about 570 EUR); for a Bachelor’s programme, NTD 15,000 (about 425 EUR) per month. You will also receive up to NTD 40,000 (approximately 1,140 EUR) per semester to cover tuition fees and basic study costs. If your fees are higher, you will have to cover the difference yourself. The scholarship lasts for up to 4 years for a Bachelor’s degree programme, up to 2 years for a Master’s degree programme and up to 4 years for a PhD programme, but never for longer than 5 years in total. The scholarship year runs from 1 September to 31 August. It is funded by the Taiwanese Ministry of Education for international students wishing to undertake full-time study at a university in Taiwan. It does not cover the costs of accommodation, insurance, internet access, or administrative and supervision fees for final-year dissertations.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a foreign national. Citizens of Taiwan (Republic of China), mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao are not eligible to apply. Holders of a Taiwanese permanent residence permit or an ‘Employment Gold Card’ are also not eligible to apply.
• Degree or level: You have at least a school-leaving qualification and are starting a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Taiwan.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Where you study: At a university or college in Taiwan. You must apply for admission separately to the relevant institution.
• Grades: You have a track record of outstanding academic achievement.
• Not already enrolled: You are not currently studying at a Taiwanese university. You can still apply if you are due to graduate this year and wish to pursue further studies.
• No repeat funding: You have not received a Taiwan scholarship for a total of 5 years; it has never been withdrawn from you; and you do not receive any other funding from the Taiwanese Government or a Taiwanese institution.
• Language: For degree programmes that are not taught entirely in English, you will need a TOCFL certificate demonstrating a level of Chinese proficiency of 3 or higher. You may sit the exam after your arrival if it is not available in your place of residence. For degree programmes taught in English, you must provide evidence of your English language proficiency, for example through a TOEFL result or a degree completed in English.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Taiwan Scholarship Portal. You must also send your printed application form and the required supporting documents to the Taiwan (ROC) diplomatic mission responsible for your place of residence by 31 March. The diplomatic mission may conduct an interview with you; the results will be announced by 31 May.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a well-known government scholarship open to all nationalities and all fields of study; as a result, there is a large pool of applicants and competition is fierce. The Taiwanese representative office in the relevant country decides on the allocation of places, taking into account academic grades as well as a clear plan for your studies in Taiwan. If you have excellent academic results and secure a place at university early on, your chances are good.
