About this scholarship

MAICh full scholarship for a Master of Science

You will receive a full scholarship for two years. This covers tuition fees as well as accommodation and meals during your studies. You will undertake a two-year Master of Science programme at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (CIHEAM-MAICh) in Crete, Greece. You can choose from five English-taught degree programmes: Business Administration and Management, Food Quality and Chemistry of Natural Products, Geoinformation in Environmental Management, Horticultural Genetics and Biotechnology, or Sustainable Agriculture. Each year, the institute awards 4 to 5 scholarships per country. Greece recognises this MSc as equivalent to a Master’s degree from a Greek state university, and more than 300 graduates have gone on to complete a PhD.

Who can apply

  • Your degree: You have completed at least four years of higher education (240 ECTS) in a subject relevant to your chosen degree programme.
  • Academic level: Your results are good enough to qualify you for a PhD programme in your home country.
  • English: You must demonstrate a good command of English, for example through IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 or a language certificate from Cambridge or Michigan. If you have obtained a university degree in the USA, the UK or another English-speaking country, you do not need a certificate.
  • Nationality: The programme is open to graduates from Mediterranean and European countries. Applicants from CIHEAM member countries (such as Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Egypt and Turkey) will be given priority.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Institute’s application portal. The application deadline for the following academic year is 30 June. Selection is based on your application documents: your academic achievements and any professional experience in your chosen field. The final decision is made by the CIHEAM Governing Board.

How realistic are your chances?

Only 4 to 5 scholarships are awarded to applicants per country, so whilst competition within your own country is low, the entry requirements are high. If you have a solid four-year university degree in a relevant subject area, a good command of English and, ideally, are from a CIHEAM member country, your chances are good. Convincing evidence of academic achievement or relevant professional experience is what sets applicants apart from the rest.
