About this scholarship
Gustaf B. Thordéns foundation scholarship
You will receive a one-off payment of 1,000 EUR for your maritime studies. The Foundation awards this grant to students in Finland, Sweden and the Åland Islands who are preparing for a career at sea. It was established in 2013 to promote maritime education and to honour the shipowner Gustaf B. Thordén.
Who can apply
- Field of study: You are studying a maritime subject, for example, to become a watch officer (deck) or a watch engineer.
- Where you study: You are studying at a university of applied sciences, a university or a maritime officer training college in Finland, Sweden or the Åland Islands.
- Study progress: You have started at least your second year of study.
- Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they are studying at one of these schools.
How to apply
You can apply online in February. The application deadline is 28. The results will be announced at the end of April, and payments will be made in May.
How realistic are your chances?
The funding scheme is aimed at students of maritime disciplines in three countries, so the pool of applicants is small. However, demand is high: in the year 2026, 75 out of 244 eligible applicants were awarded a scholarship – in other words, roughly one in three. If you clearly meet the criteria regarding your second year of study and maritime training, and apply within the short application window in February, your chances are quite good.
