What you get

You will receive a travel grant of 1,200 EUR for a research trip to Canada. It covers travel and living expenses. Three-quarters of the amount will be paid out before your departure. The remaining quarter will be paid once you have submitted a research report following the acceptance of your Master’s thesis. You will also receive a free one-year introductory membership of the Nordic Association for Canadian Studies (NACS), the network of Canadian studies scholars from the Nordic countries that awards the grant. The grant is intended exclusively for research trips, not for tuition fees at a Canadian university.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a Master’s student.
• Where you study: You are enrolled at a higher education institution in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden.
• Your plan: You intend to travel to Canada for research purposes as part of your studies.
• Field of study: Anyone interested is welcome to apply.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying at a Nordic university.

How to apply

There is no standard application form. You should submit a brief CV, a project plan, your proposed itinerary and a cost estimate. Please enclose a letter of recommendation from your supervisor or another member of the academic staff, preferably in English. The NACS Secretariat processes the applications. There are three application deadlines per year: 15 January, 15 April and 15 October.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is highly selective. Only Master’s students at Nordic universities who are planning a research trip to Canada are eligible to apply, and only one to three grants are awarded each year. The pool of eligible applicants is therefore small. If you clearly meet these criteria and submit a well-reasoned project proposal accompanied by a convincing recommendation from your supervisor, your chances are good. A convincing, concrete research proposal is more important than perfect wording.
