Fox International Fellowship

You will spend 10 months doing full-time research abroad, fully funded, at Yale University or one of its 20 partner universities worldwide. Partners include Cambridge in the UK, Sciences Po in Paris and the Free University of Berlin. The scholarship covers your return flights in economy class, health insurance and a living allowance (a monthly stipend towards living costs), the amount of which will be specified individually in your award letter. If you are going to Yale, you will also be provided with a room in a Fox shared accommodation, with utilities, furniture and use of the kitchen included. In exceptional cases, you will instead receive 1,000 USD per month as a housing allowance. For field research, archival work or conferences, you can apply for up to 2,000 USD from a research travel fund, plus an additional grant if you are bringing children under the age of 18. The MacMillan Centre at Yale University runs the programme, which already has more than 600 former fellows.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a Master’s or PhD student enrolled on a programme that runs for the entire scholarship year. Postdoctoral researchers are not eligible to apply. PhD students at Yale University should have already completed their coursework.
• Where you can research: You can’t base your project in your home country. The point is to go abroad.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Field of study: Your degree may have been in any subject area. However, your research project must focus on one of the following areas: international relations, global affairs, environmental policy, public health, economics and finance, sociology, economics, political science, political theory, law or contemporary history.
• English: If you are applying to study at Yale University, you will need a very good command of English, roughly equivalent to the level required for the TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0. This requirement does not apply if English is the language of instruction at your university.

How to apply

If you are studying at a partner university, you cannot apply directly to Yale. Your university conducts its own selection process and nominates its best students; application deadlines are usually in January or February. Students at Yale University must apply online via the university’s scholarships and grants database by 13 February. Everyone will receive a response by mid-April; interviews may be held in some cases.

How realistic are your chances?

At least one scholarship holder will be selected from each of the approximately 20 partner universities. You will therefore be competing mainly with high-achieving students from your own university, rather than with applicants from all over the world. The standards for research quality, academic results and leadership skills are high, but the pool of applicants is smaller than for an open, global scholarship. If your project clearly fits into one of the specified priority areas and you submit a compelling application, your chances are good.
