Benefaction from the late Mrs Jane Ledig-Rowohlt (nee Scatcherd), widow of the German publisher, Mr Heinrich Ledig-Rowohlt - Scatcherd Scholarships

Benefit

You will receive up to about 7,500 EUR (up to £6,500) to study or conduct research in a European country other than the UK for between 3 months and up to a full year. The exact amount depends on the length of your stay and the costs involved. It also covers the standard tuition or enrolment fees at the host university. The University of Oxford funds the scholarship from a donation made by the late Jane Ledig-Rowohlt and usually awards between five and seven scholarships per cycle. You may receive it alongside a Turing Fellowship or other funding, but you must declare all other sources of funding in your application.

Eligibility

• Where you study: You are currently a student at the University of Oxford, at one of its colleges, and will remain enrolled at Oxford whilst you are studying abroad to complete your degree.
• Level: Open to students on undergraduate (Bachelor’s) and postgraduate (Master’s or PhD) programmes.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: All nationalities are welcome, regardless of their fee status (domestic or international).
• Where you go: Your study or research placement will take place in a European country – whether within or outside the EU – but not in the United Kingdom.
• Year of study: Every academic year. If you are in your final year of study, you must explain why the trip is of direct relevance to your studies at this stage.
• Host contact: Before applying, you must contact a potential supervisor at the host institution and be able to provide evidence of this.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the University of Oxford’s online form. For study periods during the academic year 2026/27, the application deadline was Friday, 30 January 2026, at 12 noon, and the results will be announced in May 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

The scholarship programme is restricted to current students at the University of Oxford, but is open to students from all disciplines, years of study and nationalities within this group. Consequently, there is a broad pool of applicants for just five to seven scholarships. A clear, relevant study plan and a confirmed supervisor at the host institution will help applicants stand out from the crowd, particularly final-year students, who must justify the timing of their application. Make sure you secure a contact person at the host university at an early stage and set out your academic arguments clearly.
