About this scholarship

What the IKY postgraduate scholarships offer

The State Scholarships Foundation of Greece (IKY), the national scholarships body, runs several separate postgraduate awards each year. Each award covers a fixed period of study or research. This ranges from a four-week research visit to a full 36-month doctorate. The main current programmes are:

  • Master 2 in France (Greek-French Partnership): 22 scholarships for one academic year of second-year Master's study in France.
  • Short stay in the UK (Greek-British Partnership): 24 scholarships for a four-week research visit to a UK university or research centre.
  • Theodorideion Bequest: 6 scholarships for a Master's degree abroad in Education Sciences.
  • Nik. D. Chrysoverges Bequest: 6 doctoral scholarships (one per field) for 36 months in Greece or abroad, in Physiology, Climate Change and Atmospheric Physics, Energy Technology, Artificial Intelligence (technical and social), or History, Archaeology, Philosophy and Philology.
  • Max Weber Scholarship: 1 place for 12 months of postdoctoral research (research after a doctorate) at the European University Institute in Florence, in History and Culture, Social and Political Sciences, Legal Sciences, or Economic Sciences.

IKY funds these awards from its own budget, EU co-funding, bilateral agreements with France and the UK, and private bequests. The exact monthly amounts are set in each programme's official call and are not published in English.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: This depends on the programme. Master's awards need a completed first degree. The UK short-stay is for current postgraduate and PhD students. Chrysoverges is for future doctoral candidates, and Max Weber is for researchers who already hold a doctorate.
  • Where you study now: You have graduated from a Greek higher education institution, or you are currently enrolled at a Greek university, depending on the programme.
  • Field of study: The France Master 2 and UK short stay are open to all subjects. The others are tied to set fields: Education Sciences for Theodorideion, the six listed fields for Chrysoverges, and four fields for Max Weber.
  • Grades: For the Theodorideion and Chrysoverges awards, your degree must be graded at least "Very Good".
  • Nationality: The Max Weber award is for Greek researchers. The other programmes are for graduates and students of Greek universities.

How to apply

Each programme has its own channel and deadline. You apply for the France Master 2 award through the French Institute of Greece platform, and for the UK short-stay through the British Council online platform. You apply for the bequest and Max Weber awards directly with IKY. Deadlines vary by programme and cycle, so check the specific call for the current year's date.

How realistic are your chances?

The odds differ sharply between programmes. The bequest and Max Weber awards give only about six places, or even a single one, tied to specific fields and a "Very Good" grade, so competition is stiff and only closely matched candidates get in. The France and UK partnership awards offer 22 to 24 places and are open to all fields, giving a well-prepared applicant a more realistic shot. Match yourself to the programme whose field and level fit you best, and apply within its deadline.
