About this grant / loan

What you get

The University of Klagenfurt (AAU) offers three separate top-up grants through its International Office. Each one helps pay for a stay abroad. They cover part of your costs, not all of them, and are paid after your stay:

  • Grant for a self-organised study stay: Money towards living and travel costs for one semester at a foreign university that has no partnership with AAU. The semester must count towards your degree. The amount follows the official Austrian study-abroad rates. It does not cover tuition at the host university, but AAU waives your own tuition fees back home for that time.
  • Summer school grant: Money towards a themed summer school abroad lasting two to four weeks. The International Office sets the exact amount case by case.
  • Language course grant: 400 EUR for a two-week course, 600 EUR for three weeks and 800 EUR for four weeks of an intensive language course abroad.

Who can apply

  • University: You are enrolled as a student at the University of Klagenfurt (AAU).
  • Field of study: All subjects can apply.
  • How often: You can be funded once per degree level (bachelor, master) and per programme.
  • Language course rule: The course must run at least 15 hours per week in person. Online courses do not count.
  • Where you go: Any country is possible. A trip to your own home country is checked more strictly and has the lowest priority.
  • Extra support: You can apply for an added supplement if you have a disability, a chronic illness or children.

How to apply

Apply online through the AAU campus portal under "Mobilitätsanträge" and choose the relevant grant. The deadline is up to two weeks before your stay begins. Only complete applications are considered. For the summer school grant, contact the International Office directly, since the details are handled case by case.

How realistic are your chances?

These grants are only open to AAU students, so the pool is small and the competition is lighter than for national scholarships. Awards depend on the money available, and meeting the criteria does not guarantee funding. Apply well before the two-week deadline. If you clearly fit the rules and prepare your documents on time, your prospects are good.
