About this scholarship

Latvian State Scholarship

You get a monthly grant to study at a university in Latvia: 500 EUR per month for a bachelor's or master's programme, and 700 EUR per month for a PhD. Bachelor and master funding runs for up to 10 months (one academic year, 1 September to 30 June). PhD funding runs for up to 11 months. You can be funded for at most two periods within one study level. The money covers either your tuition fees or your living costs, but not both. You pay for travel and health insurance yourself. There is also a separate option worth 1,000 EUR to attend a Latvian summer school. The scholarships come from the Latvian Ministry of Education and Science and are run by the State Education Development Agency (VIAA).

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a citizen of one of the eligible countries. These include Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Japan, Slovakia and the USA, plus many countries with a bilateral education agreement such as Poland, Italy, France, Spain, Ukraine and China.
  • Where you study: You study at a university in Latvia. Most programmes are taught in Latvian, but some are offered in English.
  • Level: Open to bachelor, master and PhD students.
  • Progress so far: For a bachelor's, you have already finished at least one academic year by the time you apply. For a master's or PhD, you have finished the previous level.
  • University confirmation: A Latvian university has confirmed in writing that it will host you (a Confirmation Letter).
  • No double funding: You do not receive another scholarship at the same time.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.

How to apply

You apply online through the VIAA scholarship system between 1 February and 1 April 2026. Upload your documents: the university's Confirmation Letter, your grades, two recommendation letters, a motivation letter and a study plan. A VIAA committee scores each application on academic results, motivation and activity in your field, then sends decisions by email in June. For a summer school, you apply directly to the organiser, not to VIAA.

How realistic are your chances?

Eligibility is limited by nationality and by having a Latvian university already lined up to host you, so fewer people apply than for open scholarships. If you come from an eligible country, have your Confirmation Letter secured and can show strong grades and a clear reason for studying in Latvia, your prospects are good. Getting the university's confirmation in place early is the main hurdle.
