Utrecht University - Philosophy, Politics and Economics Scholarship

What you get

You receive 1,750 EUR per academic year to help cover study materials for the Bachelor's programme Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. This is a contribution towards your costs, not a full scholarship. It runs for the three years of the programme. You keep the money in year 2 and year 3 only if you held the scholarship in year 1 and make enough progress towards your degree. Each year, 5 new students receive it. Utrecht University awards it to build a more diverse student group.

Who can apply

• Programme: You are starting the PPE Bachelor's at Utrecht University as a new student.
• Nationality: You hold citizenship of the Netherlands or another EU/EEA country.
• School qualification: You have a Dutch VWO diploma (the pre-university secondary track) with Mathematics A or B, or a comparable international qualification such as an International Baccalaureate with equivalent maths.
• English: If English is not your first language, you prove your level, for example with IELTS 7.0 overall (at least 6.5 per part) or TOEFL 100.
• Diversity: You add to the mix of the group, for example through your nationality or your cultural or socio-economic background. If you are the first in your family to go to university, you are actively encouraged to apply.
• Engagement: You can show a genuine interest in society and a clear idea of what you want to do after PPE.

How to apply

Register for the PPE programme through Studielink by 14 January, 23:59 CET, and tick that you want to be considered for the scholarship. You also answer an extra question on how you add to the programme's diversity. You submit a motivation, a transcript, a reference contact and a competence test result. An interview may follow in mid-April. You hear back by the end of April, and the scholarship is confirmed in your admission letter.

How realistic are your chances?

Only 5 scholarships go out each year, but they are limited to PPE applicants from an EU/EEA country who add to the group's diversity. That keeps the eligible field narrow, though the number of places is small. If you clearly fit that profile, especially as the first in your family at university, and put real thought into your motivation, your prospects are reasonable. Since the scholarship is tied to your PPE admission, a strong overall application is what counts.
