Cochlear Graeme Clark Scholarship

You will receive 7,000 EUR in total (6,000 GBP), which will be paid out in two equal instalments over two years, i.e. 3,000 GBP at the start of each academic year. The prize is awarded by Cochlear Europe Limited and honours Professor Graeme Clark, whose research in 1982 led to the first Nucleus cochlear implant. It recognises academic achievement, leadership qualities and community involvement, and helps you to fund your studies or vocational training.

Who can apply

• Your implant: You are using a Cochlear Nucleus system, a hearing implant manufactured by Cochlear.
• Nationality and residence: You are a citizen and are resident in the United Kingdom or Ireland.
• Age: You must be at least 16 years old by the application deadline.
• Study: You are enrolled as a full-time student at a university or other tertiary education institution, including a vocational training programme, or have been admitted there.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• Grades and engagement: You have an excellent academic record and can demonstrate your commitment to extracurricular activities and your local community.
• Excluded: Cochlear employees and their family members are not eligible to take part, and each participant may only win once.

How to apply

The application period begins in January. Please email your application to Cochlear by 31 March each year; applications sent by post will not be accepted. An internal committee will draw up a shortlist, after which a panel of independent experts from the field of hearing health will select a winner. You will be notified of the result by email within three months of the application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very narrowly defined: only users of a Cochlear Nucleus implant in the UK or Ireland can apply, so the target group is small. Only one scholarship is awarded each year. The key factor is a compelling personal statement in which you explain how your implant has opened up new opportunities for you, backed up by good grades and genuine commitment. If you clearly meet the criteria and submit a compelling application, your chances are good.
