Emil Boral Scholarship

The 25,000 EUR for 12 months scholarship gives you the opportunity to spend a whole year working exclusively on your research. The University of Vienna awards this scholarship on behalf of its founder, Emil Boral, who wished to support young researchers who are fully dedicated to their work. Two scholarships are awarded in each round: one for Austria and one for Switzerland.

Who can apply

• Degree: You have completed a university degree and are now working as a junior researcher.
• Nationality: You are a citizen of Austria or Switzerland.
• Field of study: Your field of research is in medicine (particularly cancer and cardiovascular diseases), chemistry, biology, philosophy or law.
• Peace focus for some fields: If you work in the fields of philosophy or law, your project must focus on behaviours that contribute to promoting peace within societies and between nations.
• Commitment: You are prepared to spend a whole year working exclusively on your research. You will cover your living costs from this scholarship or other sources.

How to apply

Please submit your application both online and by post to the Office for Research Services and Career Development at the University of Vienna. The application deadline is 1 May; the date of the postmark on your envelope will be taken as the date of submission. The documents submitted online and those sent by post must be identical; otherwise, your application will be rejected.

How realistic are your chances?

Only two scholarships are awarded per round – one for Austria and one for Switzerland. This makes the selection process a genuine competition. However, the target group is narrowly defined: You must hold the correct nationality, have a completed degree, and submit a project in one of the specified subject areas with a clear connection to peace in the fields of philosophy or law. If you meet these requirements and can present a focused research plan, your chances are realistic.
