About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive a monthly grant, paid out over 10 months a year, to study at Polytechnic Institute of Braganca (IPB) in Portugal. The amount is means-tested, so it varies from student to student and is based on your household income. The grant also covers your enrolment and tuition fees. If you move away from home to study, you will receive a housing allowance: 76.79 EUR per month if you are allocated a place in an IPB hall of residence, or up to 219.41 EUR per month as a contribution towards your rent if no place is available in a hall of residence. Additional allowances are available if you have a disability of 60% or higher, if you are undertaking an Erasmus+ placement abroad (a study period at a partner university in another country), or to cover travel costs if you come from the Azores or Madeira. The Portuguese government funds the grant through the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES). You can renew it every year and calculate the estimated amount in advance using the DGES’s online simulator.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are enrolled at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança on a bachelor’s degree programme (Licenciatura), a master’s degree programme (Mestrado) or a vocational technical programme (CTeSP).
- No higher degree already: You do not yet hold a qualification equivalent to or higher than the one you are aiming for. If you have already obtained your qualification and are undertaking a compulsory work placement, you may also apply.
- Field of study: All subjects are open.
- Residence: You are a Portuguese national, an EU citizen permanently resident in Portugal, a non-EU citizen with a permanent or long-term residence permit, a stateless person or a recognised refugee.
- Financial need: Your household income and assets are below the official thresholds. For the 2026/2027 cycle, this amounts to approximately 11,049.89 EUR per person per year, with liquid assets permitted up to 115,303.20 EUR. Higher limits apply to working students and students with temporary protection status (for example, from Syria, Afghanistan or Ukraine).
- No tax or social-security debts: You have no outstanding liabilities to the tax office or social security.
- Academic progress: From the second year of your degree onwards, you must meet certain minimum academic progress requirements in order to continue receiving funding.
How to apply
You apply online via the DGES BeOn portal, where you upload your documents. The main application period runs from 14 August to 2 October. If you enrol at a later date, you will have 20 working days from the date of your enrolment to submit your application. Late applications will be accepted until 31 May, although in this case your scholarship will be reduced on a pro rata basis.
