UBI Merit Awards (Bolsas de Mérito)

For the academic year 2024/25, you will receive a sum of one-off payment of 4,100 EUR, which will be paid as a one-off lump sum. The amount is set each year at five times the Portuguese monthly minimum wage and therefore varies in line with this wage (in the academic year 2023/24, it amounted to 3,800 EUR). This is a merit-based award for the top students at the University of Beira Interior (UBI) in Covilhã, Portugal, funded by the Portuguese government. As a rule, you may combine this award with other grants, such as a social grant.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at the University of Beira Interior (UBI).
• Degree: You are studying for a Bachelor’s degree (Licenciatura).
• Not a first-year: You were also enrolled at the UBI during the previous academic year.
• All units passed: You have passed all the modules in your study programme for the past year.
• Grades: Your average mark for the past year is at least 16 out of 20.
• Field of study: Any subject is accepted.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. UBI reviews its own academic records and automatically selects eligible students. The university then publishes the list of selected students on its academic services website, initially as a provisional list and later as a final list.

How realistic are your chances?

A maximum of 15 merit-based grants were allocated to 2023/24 under the UBI scheme. This figure is set at national level each year and may therefore change.
