About this scholarship

Higher Education Scholarship from Vila Nova de Cerveira

You will receive 1,500 EUR per year, which will be paid in May as a one-off payment for the academic year for which you have applied. The scholarship is awarded by the municipality of Vila Nova de Cerveira in northern Portugal, which awards up to 15 of these scholarships each year to local students from low-income families. It is not automatically renewed: you must reapply for each academic year. In return, you will carry out 70 hours of voluntary work for the municipality over the course of the year, preferably in your own field of study.

Who can apply

  • Where you live: You have been living in the municipality of Vila Nova de Cerveira for more than 5 years.
  • Degree: You are about to start a ‘Licenciatura’ (Bachelor’s degree) or an integrated Master’s programme at a higher education institution recognised by the Portuguese Ministry of Education, or you are already studying there.
  • Where you study: You are studying in Portugal, either on the mainland or on the islands. All subjects are eligible.
  • Enrolment: You are enrolled for at least 30 ECTS credits in the current academic year.
  • Financial need: Your household income per person per month does not exceed the Portuguese minimum wage.
  • Age: You were no older than 35 when you enrolled for the first time.
  • No prior degree: You do not already hold a higher education degree, unless you are on an integrated master's.
  • Grades: New students must have a secondary school leaving certificate with a minimum grade point average of 14 out of 20. Students already enrolled must have an academic average of at least 12 out of 20, as well as proof of their results from the last academic year.

How to apply

You must submit a paper application at the ‘Balcão Único’ (one-stop shop) at Vila Nova de Cerveira Town Hall. You can obtain the form there or from the local authority’s website. The deadline is 15 December at 16:30. A municipal committee will assess all applications on the basis of income, grades, credits earned and a number of other factors, and will publish a provisional list before the final decision is made.
