About this award / prize

Faculty of Law - Machado Vilela Prize

You will receive 700 EUR, awarded in the form of books or services provided by the publisher Almedina, for the best academic paper on a topic relating to international law (public or private law). The Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra (Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra, FDUC) awards the prize once a year with financial support from Edições Almedina, S.A. Should no written paper be submitted, or should the jury deem none to be of a sufficiently high standard, the prize will instead be awarded to the student with the highest mark in a subject relating to international law, provided that this mark is at least ‘Bom’ (Good).

Who can apply

  • University: You are studying at the Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra in Portugal.
  • Degree: You are enrolled on the Law degree programme (Licenciatura em Direito).
  • Your topic: Your work deals with a topic relating to international law, whether public or private.
  • What you submit: You must submit a written assignment on this topic. Alternatively, you may also qualify by achieving the highest mark in a module on international law (at least a ‘Bom’).
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You must submit your work to the Faculty of Law by 31 July. Please read the official regulations (Regulamento) and the call for applications (Edital) for the current academic year before submitting your work, as these set out the exact conditions.
