Canon Foundation Co-sponsored Research Fellowship

A fellowship is a funded research post. You will receive 2,500 EUR per month for one year (September to August) to carry out research as a postdoctoral fellow at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. The Canon Foundation in Europe and the EUI jointly award this fellowship every year. In addition to the monthly stipend, you may apply for further allowances. You will receive up to 310 EUR per month if a partner who earns less than 2,000 EUR per month lives with you in Florence. You will also receive 210 EUR per month for each dependent child living with you. Other benefits include a return flight from your home town to Florence (up to 1,200 EUR), health insurance under the EUI scheme, and tax-free payments from the EUI and the Canon Foundation. If you also receive another scholarship or salary, the payment will be reduced to a minimum of 1,750 EUR per month.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a Japanese national or have permanent resident status in Japan.
• Degree: You will have completed your PhD and defended your thesis by the start of the scholarship (1 September).
• Career stage: You completed your PhD no more than 5 years ago. This period is extended by one year for each period of maternity leave and for any time off work due to a serious or recurring illness.
• Field of study: Your research project fits within one of the EUI’s academic departments: Economics, History, Law, Political and Social Sciences, the Robert Schuman Centre or the Florence School of Transnational Governance.
• Where you go: They live in Florence all year round and play an active part in academic life at the EUI.
• Languages: You speak and write English well, as well as any other languages required for your research.

How to apply

You do not apply directly to the Canon Foundation. Please apply for the EUI’s Max Weber Programme via the EUI website by 16 October. Suitable Japanese applicants from this selection process will automatically be considered for this scholarship.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholarship is awarded each year, and the selection is made as part of the highly competitive Max Weber Programme. Your chances depend mainly on your research proposal and your academic achievements. As the scholarship is aimed exclusively at Japanese postdoctoral researchers at the start of their careers, only a small number of people are eligible, meaning that a compelling, well-structured application stands a real chance of securing this single place.
