Carlaw and Carlaw-Ogston Master of Music Scholarships

You get £2,000 (about 2,300 EUR) for the one-year Master of Music (MMus) at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. The money comes in two equal parts of £1,000 (about 1,150 EUR): the first at the start of the year, the second at the halfway point. Payment continues as long as you make satisfactory progress. Two scholarships of the same value are on offer for 2026-27. The Carlaw scholarship is open to everyone. The Carlaw-Ogston scholarship favours applicants who did their bachelor's degree at Aberdeen. The University's Department of Music awards both on the basis of merit and musical talent.

Who can apply

• Degree you are starting: You are beginning the full-time, 12-month MMus in Music at the University of Aberdeen, starting September 2026 or January 2027.
• Admission first: You already hold a place (conditional or unconditional) on the MMus programme before you apply for the scholarship.
• Your qualifications: You have a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree in Music, or an equivalent qualification.
• Field: Any area of music counts, whether composition or musicology.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply, whether you pay Home or International fees.
• Extra for the Carlaw-Ogston award: If you did your undergraduate degree at Aberdeen, you are preferred, but this is a bonus, not a requirement.

How to apply

You apply by email to the Department of Music's School Administrator. Send a CV (with your Aberdeen applicant reference or student ID), at least one example of recent work (a composition or an essay), and a covering letter outlining your planned studies. The deadline for the 2026-27 cycle is 31 July 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut narrowly: only students starting one specific one-year master's in music at one university compete, and there are two scholarships to give out. That keeps the applicant pool small. If you already hold your MMus place, have strong honours results and can show real musical talent, your prospects are good. Having studied at Aberdeen before helps for the Carlaw-Ogston version.
