About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a net allowance of 1,200 EUR per month for a research stay of 1 to 3 months in Israel and Jerusalem. The stay must be taken as a single continuous period and may not be split up. In addition to the subsistence allowance, the Centre will reimburse you for a return economy-class flight between your place of residence and Tel Aviv (up to 500 EUR) and cover the cost of insurance (up to 100 EUR). The fellowship is administered by the French Research Centre in Jerusalem (CRFJ), with which you will be affiliated for the duration of your stay. Please note that this allowance is not a salary: it does not entitle you to social security benefits, unemployment benefit or a pension.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are enrolled on a research-based Master’s or PhD programme, or you already hold a PhD. If you are applying as a postdoctoral researcher, you must fall under 40 and must not hold a permanent post.
  • University: You study at or hold your degree from a university in France or another EU country.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Field of study: You work in the fields of archaeology, prehistory, the humanities or the social sciences, and your work is clearly research-oriented.
  • Your project: Your research clearly requires a stay in Israel or Jerusalem, for example for fieldwork, laboratory work, surveys or the analysis of archival sources. Your topic may also relate to another region, provided that a stay there is nevertheless justified.
  • Repeat applicants: You may apply again, even if you have already received this scholarship.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by email as a single PDF file of up to 8 pages, in French or English, describing your academic background and your research project. The deadline for applications is 28 February, and you will receive a response by the end of April. The Centre’s Laboratory Council and Scientific Advisory Board will review the applications.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must have a clear, well-founded research justification for a stay in Israel or Jerusalem, and your project must align with the Centre’s key research areas in the fields of archaeology, history and the social sciences relating to the region. This keeps the pool of applicants small, meaning that a well-suited candidate with a convincing, specific project stands a good chance of success. A vague connection to the region, rather than a specific need for fieldwork or archival research, is the main reason why applications are rejected.
