About this grant / loan

What you get

Erasmus+ provides funding for a 2 days to 2 months-day professional development stay abroad, aimed at higher education staff. The funding covers part of your living costs as well as a flat-rate travel allowance. The exact amount depends on the destination country and the distance travelled, and therefore varies from trip to trip. In addition to the financial support, the focus is on professional development. You will learn how another higher education institution or organisation abroad operates, acquire new skills in the areas of teaching, curriculum development and digitalisation, and establish contacts with colleagues in other countries. The programme is managed by the European Commission, and your own higher education institution pays out the grant.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You work at a university or other higher education institution, either as academic staff (teaching or research) or as administrative staff.
  • What you do abroad: A work placement, for example as part of a job-shadowing programme (observing how colleagues work), a work experience placement or a training course, at a partner university or another organisation such as a company, a research institute, a public body or a non-governmental organisation.
  • Where you go: Abroad, to a country participating in the Erasmus+ programme or to an associated partner country. The stay must last at least 2 days between programme countries, or at least 5 days if a partner country is included.
  • Your institution: Your university must be participating in the Erasmus+ programme. This means that it must hold the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education or have signed a mobility agreement with the host university abroad.
  • Field of work: Any discipline or department may apply.
  • Nationality and age: There are no restrictions regarding nationality or age.

How to apply

You do not apply directly to the European Commission. Applications are made through your own university, usually via the International Office or the Erasmus+ Office. Your university selects the participants for these placements and sets its own deadlines. You should therefore check with them to find out when and how you can apply.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition against external candidates. It is an internal selection process at your own university amongst interested staff members. If your university takes part in the Erasmus+ programme and you have a clear study plan as well as a welcoming host institution abroad, your chances are good. The main limitation is the number of scholarships available to your university. You should therefore enquire with your International Office at an early stage.
