IBEREX Internship Programme

You will be offered a fully funded training placement in Spain. You will be accommodated free of charge at the ‘Residencia de Estudiantes’ in Madrid, with full board for the duration of your course, as well as health insurance cover (worth up to approximately 2,775 EUR). There is no monthly cash payment; the grant covers your stay whilst you are taking part in the programme. The Spanish Ministry of Culture runs the programme every year. It offers cultural professionals from Ibero-American countries practical training in Spanish museums, archives, libraries and audiovisual projects. The placements are practical work placements that usually last between one and two months.

Who can apply

• Where you work: You are already working in the cultural sector. You can demonstrate professional experience in cultural administration at a public body or a recognised private institution in your home country.
• Qualification: You hold a university degree or a relevant professional qualification in the field for which you are applying.
• Nationality: You are a national of an Ibero-American country, such as Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia or Chile. Nationals of countries where Spanish has constitutional status (Equatorial Guinea, the Philippines, Puerto Rico) may also apply.
• Residence: You do not live in Spain, regardless of your nationality.
• Age: In previous rounds, an upper limit of 40 years was set in the year the call for proposals was issued.
• First time: You have not yet received an IBEREX grant.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Ministry of Culture’s electronic portal. The application window opens in mid-March and closes on 15 April. A selection panel will assess each application based on how well your profile matches the degree programme, the experience and qualifications you bring to the role, and the extent to which your home university would benefit from your participation.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must already be working in the cultural sector, hold a relevant qualification and come from a specific group of countries, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is far smaller than for open scholarships. As only a few dozen places are available each year, competition is fierce. A well-suited applicant with demonstrable experience in the cultural sector and strong ties to their home institution has good prospects. Applying early is advantageous.
