What you get

You will receive a one-off grant of about 3,300 EUR (approximately 3 to 6 lakh INR, to be determined on an individual basis following your interview) to cover the tuition fees for a full-time Master’s degree programme abroad. As this is a grant, you will never have to repay it. The grant covers only part of your costs: you must demonstrate that at least half of your tuition fees and living costs are funded from other sources. The Tata Trusts launched this scholarship in 1933 and support up to 10 Indian women each year. In return, they expect you to bring your knowledge back to India upon completion of your studies.

Who can apply

• Women from India: The scholarship is open exclusively to Indian women.
• Degree: You already hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a recognised Indian university and have all your final marks. You cannot apply whilst you are still awaiting your results.
• Where you study: You have applied for a full-time Master’s degree programme at a university in the USA, the UK or Europe for the period 2026–2027, or have already been offered a place. Part-time, distance-learning, exchange, short-term or certificate programmes do not count. You must not have started your studies abroad yet.
• Field of study: Your degree programme must focus on topics relating to women and children. These include child health and nutrition, counselling, teacher training, special educational needs, speech and language therapy, gender studies, mental health, women’s health, human rights, legal issues relating to women’s and children’s affairs, psychology, public health, community development, social policy and social work.
• Grades: They have consistently demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.
• Work experience: At least two years’ relevant paid professional experience is desirable, but not essential.

How to apply

You should send an email to the Trust to request the application form. Please include the universities you have chosen, details of your degree programme and your admission status. You will then submit the completed form and supporting documents in several stages. The first submission is due by 30 March 2026, with further stages to follow during April. If you are shortlisted, you will attend an interview with the Board of Trustees in Mumbai at the end of June or beginning of July 2026 – either in person or online.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. Only Indian women who wish to undertake a Master’s degree abroad in a subject area relating to women and children are eligible to apply, meaning that the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships. With up to 10 scholarships awarded each year, and decisions based on your interview, academic achievements and financial need, a well-suited applicant with outstanding academic achievements and a clearly relevant course of study has good prospects. Apply early, as the application deadline is at the end of March.
