Summer Intensive Course in Modern Greek Language Scholarship

You will receive a full waiver of the 324 EUR course fee for a four-week intensive course in Modern Greek. The course takes place online every July at the School of Modern Greek at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in Greece and comprises 20 teaching hours per week. Based on a short placement test or an initial interview, you will be placed in one of three levels: beginner, intermediate or advanced. This is a fee waiver, not a cash payment, and it covers tuition fees only. You will retain this waiver as long as you fulfil all course requirements.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are currently studying, or have studied, at a university outside Greece.
• Level: Are you a bachelor’s or master’s student, a PhD student, a recent graduate or a member of staff at a university, and are you interested in the Greek language and culture?
• Field of study: All degree subjects are eligible. Preference will be given to applicants studying Greek or a related subject, but other fields of study are not excluded.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply, including those of Greek descent. Preference will be given to applicants with a connection to Greece or the Greek language.
• Greek skills: You do not need to know any Greek, as there is a beginners’ course. It is recommended that you are proficient in a common language such as English.

How to apply

Please send the official application form and the required documents, including two letters of recommendation, by post to AUTH. The application deadline is 28 February each year; the date of the postmark will be taken as the date of submission. Applications are assessed on merit and compared with one another; therefore, the number of scholarships varies from year to year.

How realistic are your chances?

The number of scholarships varies from year to year and is awarded on the basis of academic merit; therefore, there is no guarantee. If you have a clear connection to Greece or the Greek language and are studying a relevant subject, you will fit the profile favoured by the university, and your chances will improve. A well-prepared application, accompanied by strong letters of recommendation and submitted before the postal application deadline, will give you the best chance of success.
