About this scholarship

Residence grant for creators and artists at the Residencia de Estudiantes

You will be offered a place at the historic ‘Residencia de Estudiantes’ in Madrid for 12 months (from 15 December 2026 to 14 December 2027). Full board includes a room and all meals. No cash payment is provided. The aim is for you to live on site so that you can concentrate fully on your creative project. You will share daily life and cultural activities with other residents, researchers and artists. The City of Madrid (Ayuntamiento de Madrid) funds the fellowship, and the Residencia de Estudiantes is the host organisation. In this round, three fellowships will be awarded to cultural practitioners and artists.

Who can apply

  • Your work: You have been working in the arts or a creative field for at least 2 years and can present a specific project that you would like to carry out during your stay.
  • Degree: You hold a university degree and can provide evidence of this in the form of an academic certificate.
  • Field: All artistic and creative disciplines are welcome.
  • Nationality: You are Spanish or come from a Latin American country. EU citizens may also apply if they live in Spain and speak Spanish fluently.
  • Age: You must be 30 years old or younger by the application deadline. Anyone who is already 31 years old is not eligible to apply.
  • Other funding: You do not receive any other public or private aid covering the same costs.
  • First time: You have not yet received a scholarship from the ‘Residencia de Estudiantes’. Current scholarship holders may reapply as part of the open competition.
  • Language: Registration and day-to-day life at the accommodation are conducted in Spanish.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Residencia de Estudiantes website in Spanish. The application period runs from 3 September to 23 October 2026 (until 2 o’clock). The selection process consists of two stages. First, a panel will assess your project, your CV and the potential impact. If you achieve at least 7 out of 10 points, you will be invited to a face-to-face interview.

How realistic are your chances?

Only 3 places are available for creatives and artists, so competition is fierce. However, the entry criteria are quite strict: applicants must have at least two years’ experience in a creative field, a solid project and, in most cases, a fluency in Spanish as well as links to Spain or Latin America. If you clearly fit this profile and submit a compelling, well-described project, your chances are realistic. During the interview stage, preference is given to projects with a visible impact in Madrid.
