PhD in Economics fellowship (Scuola Sant'Anna)

You will receive a scholarship (a funded PhD place) amounting to 12,500 EUR per year for the four years of the PhD programme. You will also be entitled to free meals in the university canteen and access to the campus facilities. The place is on the PhD programme in Economics at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, Italy, which is run in partnership with the Université Côte d’Azur in Nice, France. The programme begins with approximately one and a half years of intensive coursework, some of which takes place in Nice. Afterwards, you will carry out research for your own doctoral thesis under supervision. Teaching is conducted in English. The funding is renewed annually, provided you pass the required examinations.

Who can apply

• Degree: You must hold a Master of Science, a Master of Arts or an equivalent qualification. Students in their final year of study may also apply, provided they complete their degree before the start of the course.
• Field of study: Economics. The programme covers microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, as well as areas such as the economics of innovation, evolutionary economics, industry dynamics, economic history, and economic networks and complexity.
• Where you study: You work at the Scuola Sant'Anna in Pisa and are spending a few months at the Université Côte d'Azur in Nice.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the university’s application portal by 15 April at 12:00 midday (CEST). Selection will be based on your application documents: CV, academic transcripts, Master’s thesis, research proposal and at least two academic reference letters. There will be no interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a small, specialised programme with only a handful of funded places available each year. These are awarded to outstanding economics graduates with a clear research focus. Competition is fierce, as the scholarship is fully funded and internationally recognised. However, given the programme’s narrow focus on Sant’Anna’s research areas, a well-suited candidate with a compelling research proposal will stand out in particular. As there is no interview, a compelling research proposal and strong references are of crucial importance.
