About this scholarship

SECIHTI grant for a master's or doctorate abroad

You get a monthly payment plus health insurance, and for many the tuition fees too, to study a master's or PhD outside Mexico. The monthly amount depends on where you go: in Europe it is 1,240 EUR (or 1,512 EUR if you support dependants), in the UK about 1,190 EUR (1,030 GBP), and elsewhere about 1,150 EUR (1,250 USD). A yearly health-insurance allowance is added on top, and it rises with the number of dependants. If you pick the "Tipo 1" grant, tuition is also covered: up to 3,500 EUR a year for a master's and 9,000 EUR a year for a PhD in Europe. The UK and rest of the world have their own caps in local currency. Dependants here means a spouse or partner, children under 18, adult children with a disability, or a parent who depends on you financially. Funding runs for the normal length of your programme. The grant comes from Mexico's Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (SECIHTI).

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a Mexican citizen.
  • Level: You are admitted to, or already enrolled in, a master's or doctorate abroad. It must be taught in person, not online.
  • Field of study: Your subject is one of SECIHTI's priority areas. These are broad. They cover physical and earth sciences, biology and chemistry, medicine and health, psychology and education, humanities (history, philosophy, anthropology, linguistics, gender studies and more), social sciences (law, economics, political science, sociology and more), agriculture and biotechnology, and engineering.
  • Where you go: You study outside Mexico. Your programme starts no earlier than September 2026 and no later than 30 April 2027.
  • No double funding: You do not already hold, and have not applied for, another equivalent government grant for the same purpose.
  • Clean record: You have no unfinished obligations from an earlier SECIHTI or Conahcyt grant. You are not repeating a degree you already earned with one.

How to apply

First create or update your CVU profile on SECIHTI's Rizoma system. Then submit your application with your study goals and a plan to return and work in Mexico, signed electronically with your CURP (your Mexican personal ID number). You can apply from 23 March to 22 May 2026, and results come out on 7 August 2026. National researchers score each application on how well your subject, university and return plan fit the programme's aims.

How realistic are your chances?

The grant is open to any Mexican in a priority field, which is a wide net, so the pool of applicants is large and selection is competitive. Your prospects rest on the fit: a clear match between your subject and the priority areas, a strong host university, and a credible plan to return to Mexico all count. Prepare that return plan carefully, since it is one of the things evaluators weigh.
