About this scholarship
France-New Zealand University Research Linkage grant
You get a one-off travel grant of about 2,800 EUR (NZD 5,000) to travel to mainland France, or about 1,700 EUR (NZD 3,000) for a trip to New Caledonia or French Polynesia. The money is paid directly to you. It covers a short project abroad such as a summer school, a short-term programme or a research internship. It is funded by the French Embassy in New Zealand and the Cook Islands, together with Universities New Zealand.
Who can apply
- Degree level: You are enrolled in a Master's or PhD programme at a New Zealand university.
- Research: Your studies include research work.
- Field of study: Any subject can apply.
- Nationality: You are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. You cannot apply if you hold both French and New Zealand nationality.
- French skills: None needed. You do not have to speak or understand French.
- Timing: You must finish your trip to France by 15 June 2026.
How to apply
You apply online through the Universities New Zealand portal by 30 September 2025. A panel of one French Embassy representative and two Universities New Zealand representatives scores each application out of 20. They judge your academic record, how relevant your project is, your motivation and your expected results.
How realistic are your chances?
This grant is cut narrowly: you must be a New Zealand-based Master's or PhD student doing research and travelling to France or its Pacific territories, so the eligible group is small. At least one grant is awarded each year, but none is given if no applicant meets the quality bar. So a clear, well-argued project matters. If you fit the criteria and can show a strong, relevant plan, your prospects are good.
