Sophie Germain Scholarship (FMJH)

You get 11,000 EUR net per year for one year of a mathematics master's. A flat sum also covers your university registration fees. The Fondation Mathématique Jacques Hadamard funds around 50 students a year to study in the "Mathematics and Applications" master's programme at the Paris-Saclay Campus in France. You can apply for the first master year (M1) or the second (M2). If you come from outside Europe and study here for the first time, you also get:

• Up to 2,000 EUR towards one return flight and visa fees, scaled to your home country.
• A single studio room in a hall of residence near the campus (Orsay or Evry).
• A starter kit of household basics (bedding, pots, plates, cutlery) worth about 100 EUR.

Free French language courses are included. You cannot combine this scholarship with any other excellence scholarship.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are applying to start the first or second year of a master's in "Mathematics and Applications".
• Where you study: The programme runs at Université Paris-Saclay or the Institut Polytechnique de Paris on the Paris-Saclay Campus near Paris.
• Field: Only the research-oriented tracks qualify, such as data science, cryptology, mathematics and artificial intelligence, or number theory and geometry.
• Nationality: Open to students from anywhere in the world.
• Language: If you do not speak French, apply to the Jacques Hadamard tracks, which are taught in English.
• Grades: You need strong academic results, shown through your transcripts and two letters of recommendation.

How to apply

You apply online. There are two windows. The first runs from October to the end of January for students coming from outside the Paris-Saclay area. Students from outside Europe must apply in this one, so their visa can be processed in time. The second runs from March to early June for students already on campus (deadline 25 May 2026 for the 2026 cycle). You must also send a separate enrolment application to Université Paris-Saclay or the Institut Polytechnique de Paris. Results come by email about five weeks after the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

The field is narrowed to strong mathematics students aiming for a research master's at one specific campus. So the pool is smaller than for open, general scholarships, and with around 50 awards each year there is real room. Your grades and a carefully written study plan decide it, and the jury actively works towards a balanced share of women. If your grades are strong, you clearly fit one of the eligible research tracks, and you apply in the correct window, your prospects are good.
