Throne-Holst Foundation scholarship for a research stay abroad

You will receive a scholarship of up to about 280,000 SEK (about 25,000 EUR) to undertake part of your PhD at a leading research centre outside your home country. The funding will cover your travel and living expenses, and the scholarships run for a period of 3 to 12 months. It is provided by the Henning and Johan Throne-Holst Foundation, a Swedish organisation founded in 1976 which funds research into how diet and food affect human health in Sweden and Norway. Each year, the Foundation awards a total of 1 to 2 million SEK (approximately 90,000 to 180,000 EUR), divided amongst several grants.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a PhD student and your stay abroad forms part of your doctoral thesis.
• Field: Your research focuses on nutrition and nutritional science, or a closely related field such as food science, dietetics or clinical nutrition.
• Where you are based: You are doing a PhD in Sweden or Norway.
• Where you go: You will spend the funding period at a leading research centre abroad, not in the country where you are studying.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled as PhD students in Sweden or Norway.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must be a PhD student in Sweden or Norway, be conducting research in the field of nutrition, and require a placement at a foreign research centre for your thesis. As a result, the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you clearly meet the criteria and can explain why the stay is important for your research, your chances are good. The foundation supports only a handful of people each year, so a well-reasoned justification is crucial.
