What the Tullow Group Scholarship gives you

You will receive a full scholarship for a postgraduate degree in the UK. This will cover your full tuition fees as well as additional costs such as travel and living expenses. There is no published monthly amount, but the scholarship covers the costs of the course itself as well as the practical costs of travelling to and living in the host country. The programme is funded by the oil and gas company Tullow Oil and administered by the British Council. The focus is on subject areas where there is a shortage of skilled workers in the partner countries, meaning a broad spectrum is covered: Earth sciences, engineering (petroleum, chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering), agriculture, environment and forestry, marine sciences and fisheries, hospitality and tourism, logistics, law, and economics, finance and management.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a national of one of the following countries and currently live there: Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Gabon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Mauritania, Congo (Brazzaville), Bangladesh, Suriname or French Guiana.
• Degree level: You would like to undertake postgraduate study (Master’s or higher) or gain a vocational or technical qualification.
• Your qualifications: You already hold a bachelor’s degree from 2:2 (second lower) or higher, or an HND with a ‘First Class’ grade.
• Work: You are currently in employment and have a proven track record of significant achievements in your field.
• No previous study abroad: You have never studied abroad and have never received an international scholarship.
• Commitment to return: You agree to return to your home country afterwards and help with its reconstruction.
• Field of study: Any relevant topic is acceptable, although the areas listed above take precedence.
• Local applicants: If you are from a region where Tullow operates (Uganda or western Ghana), you must also provide evidence that you have lived there for at least five years, for example by means of a birth certificate, school reports or proof of employment.

How to apply

Applications must be made via the official website of the Tullow Group Scholarship Programme, which is run by the British Council. You must first submit an expression of interest. Only shortlisted applicants will then be asked to submit their full application. The application deadline is 28 February, so please apply as early as possible.

How realistic are your chances?

Nationality, professional experience and the rule that applicants must not have previously studied abroad limit the pool of eligible candidates in each country, and 5 to 50 places are offered per country. If you clearly meet these criteria, work in one of the priority sectors and can present a credible plan for your return to your home country, your chances are good. As this is a full scholarship, competition is fierce, which is why a convincing and detailed application is crucial.
