The John and Margaretha Aspegrens Scholarship

This is the 100,000 SEK (about 8,700 EUR) Prize, which is awarded approximately every two years by the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). It is a recognition of an individual’s achievements and is not a scholarship for which one can apply. The IVA selects an outstanding individual and presents them with the award at its gala meeting, which usually takes place in October. The prize is awarded alternately in two disciplines: one year it goes to an engineer or scientist, the next to a figure from the humanities. The aim is set out in the founders’ will: to foster a better understanding between the engineering sciences and the humanities.

Who can receive it

• Field of work: You work either in the field of engineering and natural sciences or in the humanities. The prize alternates between these two fields from one award ceremony to the next.
• Merit: You can look back on an outstanding career. This is particularly true of your work, which combines science and technology with the humanities, or which makes science accessible to a wider audience.
• Nationality: There are no specific rules regarding nationality. Previous prize-winners were based in Sweden.
• Not for students: This award recognises an established professional career, not a degree programme that has not yet been completed. Open applications are not accepted. Previous winners include professors, researchers, science journalists, artists and social entrepreneurs.

How realistic are your chances?

It is not possible to apply for this award, and there is no public process for being considered for it. The IVA selects the winner itself and awards the prize to one person approximately every two years. It is awarded to individuals who already hold a prominent position in their field and whose work bridges the gap between engineering and the humanities. Think of it as an honour that follows a successful career, rather than a grant that one can plan for.
