About this scholarship
Cedergren Upbringing Fund scholarship
Each semester, you will receive a fixed, tax-free grant to help fund your studies in Sweden. The amount depends on your level of study:
- 17,500 SEK per semester (about 1,550 EUR) for upper secondary school (Gymnasium).
- 26,250 SEK per semester (about 2,300 EUR) if you are attending secondary school and do not live with your parents.
- 35,000 SEK per semester (about 3,100 EUR) for higher education at a college or university.
The scholarship will be paid until you have completed your studies, provided that you stick to your study plan and submit your marks every term. The funding comes from a Swedish foundation which was established in the early 1900s and supports young people who would otherwise be unable to afford their education.
Who can apply
- Level: You are studying at upper secondary level up to your first academic qualification, including a Master’s degree. If you already hold a qualification, you are not eligible for funding for a new degree programme in a different subject area.
- Field of study: Any subject.
- Grades or talent: You have achieved good academic results or have a particular talent that you can demonstrate in a field such as music, art, dance or singing.
- Financial need: Your family needs support. The foundation will assess both your income and that of your parents, even if you are already independent.
- Nationality: You are a Swedish citizen or can prove that you are permanently resident in Sweden. This also applies to stateless persons with a residence permit.
- Age: You can apply from the year 9 at the earliest (if you intend to go on to study at a secondary school) up to the age of approximately 28; decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.
- Length of studies: You still have at least four semesters of study ahead of you. Individual final-year semesters, individual exchange semesters, PhD programmes, adult education and language study placements are not eligible for funding.
How to apply
You can apply online between 1 November and 31 March. A well-written personal statement explaining why you, in particular, should be awarded the scholarship carries great weight – so do take your time over it. The committee will make its decision in mid-June. Apply in the spring, even if your degree course does not start until the autumn and even before you have received your admission results.
How realistic are your chances?
Every year, around 350 people apply, and around 40 are accepted, meaning that roughly one in ten is successful. Your chances will improve if you can demonstrate a genuine financial need alongside outstanding academic performance or a genuine special talent, and if your personal statement is convincing. A well-thought-out, well-reasoned application is more important here than mere perfection.
