About this award / prize

Herman Wold Gold Medal

You are to receive a gold Herman Wold medal and a diploma. This award honours an individual who has made a significant contribution to chemometrics. Chemometrics is the application of statistics and mathematics to the analysis of complex chemical and biological data, and overlaps with what others refer to as machine learning or multivariate data analysis. The prize is awarded by the Chemometrics Section of the Swedish Chemical Society. It was established in 1995 in honour of the statistician Herman Wold and is usually presented every two years at the Scandinavian Symposium on Chemometrics. There is no prize money.

Who can apply

  • You are nominated, not self-applying: You cannot nominate yourself. You must be nominated by someone from the relevant field, and at least one other expert must endorse this nomination.
  • Your contribution: You have significantly advanced or spread chemometrics, machine learning or multivariate data analysis in research, development or production.
  • Nationality: Anyone can be nominated, regardless of where they come from.
  • Job or affiliation: Open to people from both the academic and business worlds. Your employer or job title is irrelevant.

How to apply

Your nominator emails the Chemometrics Division (PDF preferred) with a nomination letter and motivation, a summary of your achievements, your CV, and a letter of support from at least one other expert. The deadline for the 2025 round was 22 April 2025, 23:59 CET. The board of the Chemometrics Division picks the winner.

How realistic are your chances?

It is a single, highly prestigious award presented every two years to a leading figure; consequently, competition for it is fierce. A convincing nomination by peers is crucial, as candidates cannot nominate themselves. Realistically speaking, the award recognises an established career with recognised achievements in the field of chemometrics, rather than a career that is still in its early stages.
