Eina Schortz donation scholarship

You will receive a one-off payment of about 4,300 EUR (49,000 SEK) to support your studies. This is awarded by HDK-Valand, the Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg. The number of scholarships varies from year to year; in the year 2025, four scholarships were awarded. The funds come from a donation by Eina Schortz, an artist and textiles teacher who studied at this university herself. The scholarships are intended for women studying fine art who are going through a difficult time during their studies.

Who can apply

• Programme: You are enrolled on the Fine Art programme (“fri konst” / independent art) at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg.
• Gender: You are a student.
• Your situation: You are facing genuine difficulties during your studies, such as financial problems, health issues or the strain of being a single parent. You can provide supporting documentation to prove this.
• Motivation: Please write a brief personal statement explaining what you would use the money for.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications are made via the ‘Stipendier’ course room on Canvas, the University’s online learning platform. The application window is open in February and March, and the deadline for applications is 11 March. The HDK-Valand Scholarship Committee will make its decision based on your documented financial hardship and your personal statement, in consultation with the university’s academic advisers.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very narrowly defined. Only women studying art at a specific university who can demonstrate that they are in genuine financial hardship are eligible, so the target group is small. If you clearly meet these criteria and can substantiate your situation with supporting documents and a clear explanation, your chances are good. An honest, well-documented application counts for more here than a polished one.
