You get a research grant sized to your project budget. There is no fixed per-person rate: the amount depends on the budget you submit, and you must include any overhead costs in the sum you ask for. In 2026 the foundation funded 29 projects. Individual grants ran from about 350,000 SEK to 887,000 SEK (roughly 31,000 EUR to 78,000 EUR), with a combined total of 19,244,000 SEK (about 1.7 million EUR). The foundation was set up in memory of J. Gust. Richert, whose 1897 engineering firm is now part of the Sweco group. It funds research, teaching and training in environmental protection, energy, urban and community development, and transport technology.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are a researcher linked to a Swedish university, college, institute or other research environment. This is project funding for researchers, not a grant for individual students.
• Field: Your project fits environmental protection, energy, community and urban development, or transport technology.
• Type of research: Your work is close to practical use and clearly serves sustainable community and urban development. Pure basic research is not prioritised.
• 2026 focus (a plus, not a must): Projects on resilience and preparedness, the green transition, or digitalisation and AI as enablers are especially welcome. So are cross-sector projects between academia, business, the public sector, institutes or civil society.

How to apply

You apply once a year through the foundation's online application system, writing in Swedish or English. The system opens on 1 February and closes on 31 March at 23:59. The board reviews all applications in writing, with no interview, and announces decisions before 30 June.

How realistic are your chances?

This is narrowly targeted funding. You need a Swedish research affiliation, a project in one of four technical fields, and a clear path to practical use, so only a specific research community can apply. With 29 projects funded in 2026 and a large total pot, the odds are better than for a single high-profile award. A well-defined, application-oriented project that matches this year's focus areas has solid prospects.
