BU Music Scholarship

You will receive benefits in kind from Bournemouth University in the United Kingdom to the value of about £600 per year (roughly 700 EUR). Instead of a cash payment, the support includes free one-to-one music tuition, examination fees (e.g. for ABRSM examinations) and assistance with the purchase of sheet music. This support applies to your first year of study and may continue in subsequent years, provided you continue to meet the criteria. In return, you will perform at university concerts and play or sing in at least one university ensemble (a group that performs together, such as an orchestra or choir).

Who can apply

• Degree: You are applying for a full-time Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme at Bournemouth University.
• Musical level: You have achieved grade 8 (ABRSM, Trinity or LCM) or an equivalent level on your main instrument or in singing. Grade 6 or higher may be considered in exceptional cases and provided that financial resources permit.
• Music theory: You have passed your A-level in Music with a grade of C or higher, or you have passed the music theory examination at level 8.
• Ensemble experience: You’ve played or sung in an ensemble.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, including international applicants.

How to apply

You should apply via the online form and provide two references from people who can attest to your musical abilities, such as a music teacher or an ensemble director. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an audition and will receive a response within two weeks. The application deadline is 31 August for courses starting in September and 30 November for courses starting in January. Late applications may still be considered, provided funds are still available.

How realistic are your chances?

This place is highly sought-after. You must study at Bournemouth University and demonstrate a high standard of musical ability (level 8) as well as a sound grounding in music theory; consequently, the pool of suitable applicants is small. If you clearly meet these requirements and perform well in the entrance exam, your chances are good. Applying by the deadline is advantageous, as the allocation of places depends on the funds available.
