Benefit

At level 1, you will receive up to about 5,800 EUR per year (up to £5,000), whilst at level 2 you will receive approximately 3,500 EUR per year (up to £3,000). The scholarship is awarded for one year at a time. Queen’s University Belfast funds this scholarship, which is its highest-value sports scholarship for athletes competing at the highest level. The package may also include strength and conditioning training, physiotherapy and medical care, sports science and nutrition support, sport-specific coaching, performance workshops, equipment, and free use of the university gym, swimming pool and fitness classes. Your studies will be tailored to fit in with your training and competitions.

Eligibility

• University: You are studying at Queen’s University Belfast, either full-time or part-time.
• Level: You are a Bachelor’s or Master’s student.
• Sporting level: You take part in competitions at international, national or professional level in an individual or team sport outside an academy.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Placement or Erasmus students: You can receive an agreed-upon package if you maintain your performance and represent Queen’s with dignity.
• Leave of absence: You cannot apply for a job whilst on leave.

How to apply

Please apply by 29 September using the online form on the Queen’s Performance Sport website. If you meet the criteria, you will be invited to an interview. Your interview score and your references will determine whether you are placed in Level 1 or Level 2. Anyone offered a place must pass a medical examination.

How realistic are your chances?

This is Queen’s University’s highest sporting honour, reserved exclusively for athletes who compete at international, national or professional level; consequently, the pool of candidates is small and clearly defined. If you are actually competing at this level and studying at Queen’s, your chances are good. During the interview, a decision will then be made as to whether you will be placed in level 1 or 2 – so it is not a question of whether you will be admitted at all. The criterion is your sporting ability, not your academic grades.
